"The Unloved" was Samantha Morton's debut as a film director who also co-wrote the feature with writer Tony Grisoni. As anticipated, the film generated a vast amount of interest from the industry and public alike when it hit our TV screens as part of Channel 4's "Britains forgotten children" season in May 2009. The film starred Rama Young Actor Molly Windsor in the lead role of Lucy. The film also featured group member Katie Withers as Jules alongside actors Robert Carlyle and Susan Lynch.
"The Unloved" won the BAFTA award for Best Single drama, and successfully rasied issues about the care system in the UK. The issues raised were debated on Newsnight and in the Houses of Parliament.
Reviewers seemed to have nothing but praise for the film and for young Molly's performance. Her performance has been described by respected reviewers as "Remarkable", "astonishingly good", "utterly convincing", "outstanding" and "knock out!".
